Romans 16: Honor and Commend Fellow Workers

Romans 16: Honor and Commend Fellow Workers Collin Leong. Dec 8, 2025 (v1-16) Personal Greetings Paul mentioned a several names that he knows, to thank them and asked the Roman church to greet them.  (v1-2) Sister Phoebe , a servant of the church at Cenchreae, that they may welcome her in the Lord, worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need, for she has been a patron of many and of Paul himself.  Exp:  Scholars widely believe Phoebe was entrusted to deliver Paul’s letter to the Romans. In the ancient world, the letter carrier often read the letter aloud and explained its meaning, which implies Phoebe may have been one of the earliest interpreters of Romans (v3-5a) Greet Prisca (Priscilla) and Aquila , my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles as well. Greet their church in the their house.  Exp:  Aquila was a Jew from Pontus; both were expelled from...

Romans 15: Unity In Glorifying God

Romans 15: Unity In Glorifying God Collin Leong. December 4, 2025 (v1-7) Accept One Another (v1-7) We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. For Christ did not please himself - "The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me." (Psalm 69:9) . For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, that through endurance and encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, an accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with on voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.  (v8-13) Christ the Hope of Jews and Gentiles (v8-12) Christ became a servant to the circumcised to show God's truthfulness, in order to confirm the promises given to...

Romans 14: Keep Convictions Between Yourself and God

Romans 14: Keep Convictions Between Yourself and God Collin Leong. December 3, 2025 (v1-12) Do Not Judge Each Other (v1-4) Welcome those who are weak in faith, but do not quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person only eats vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgement on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.  Exp: In v4, Paul said that the master (God) will judge whether the person (who eats or do not eat) stand or fall. But in the next sentence, Paul said that the Lord is able to make him stand. How does Paul know that he will stand, if he follows his own rule not to judge others? Paul is not judging, but was giving an opinion that both of them will stand, based on His understanding of God...

Romans 13: Put On The Lord Jesus Christ

Romans 13: Put On The Lord Jesus Christ Collin Leong.  December 1st, 2025 (v1-7) Submission to the Authorities (v1-4) Let everyone be subject to the government. There is no authority except from God, and the government have been instituted by God. Whoever resists the authorities resist what God has appointed, and they will incur judgement. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval. For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, and avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.  (v5-7) Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are administers of God, attending to this very thing. Pay what is owed to them: taxes, revenue, respect, ...

Romans 12: Unity In Christ

Romans 12: Unity In Christ  Collin Leong. November 28, 2025 (v1-2) A Living Sacrifice (v1-2) Paul asked the believers, by the mercies of God, to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is their spiritual worship. Do not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of their minds, in order to test and discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.  Exp: (v1) The motivation to sacrifice our bodies is the mercy of God, which points back to the many facets of God’s saving work Paul has just expounded: justification, adoption, reconciliation, the gift of the Spirit, the promise of glory, and God’s faithfulness to Israel. Sacrificial living is not coerced; it’s the grateful response to mercy already received. Worship flows from grace. The words "to present" (paristemi) is a verb used for offering sacrifices at the altar. The bodies are not the physical flesh, but the whole embodied self—actions, dail...

Romans 11: God Has Not Rejected Israel

Romans 11: God Has Not Rejected Israel Collin Leong. November 12, 2025 (v1-10) The Remnant of Israel (v1-2) Paul started with a rhetorical question, on whether God has rejected His people (the Israelites). Paul said "No!" for he himself is an Israelites, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. God would not reject the person whom he foreknew. Exp: In v2 , the word "foreknew" does not just mean God knows them for a long time. It emphasizes on the intimate relationship that they had with one another, and that God chose them to be His people through a covenant.   (v3-6) Paul gave an example Elijah and how he cries to God. He told God that the Israelites have killed His prophets and demolish you altars, and he was alone and they sought his life. But God replied that He has kept seven thousand mane who have not bowed the knee to Baal. (1 Kings 19:10,14; 1 Kings 19:18). So too, there is a remnant of the Israelites, chosen by grace, not by works; otherwise...

Romans 10: Christ is the Fulfillment of the Law

Romans 10:  Christ is the Fulfillment of the Law Collin Leong. November 10, 2025 (v1-13) Israel Needs The Gospel (v1-4) Paul desire that Israel be saved and constantly prayed for them. They have a zeal for God, but they don't fully understand Him. They are ignorant of the righteousness of God and sought to establish it in their own way. They did not submit to God's way (by faith). Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.  Exp: Paul said that Israelites are zealous for God and righteousness, but they did it in the wrong way. They reject Jesus who provided the right way - to achieve righteousness through faith in Him. This can be applied to others who are dedicated to their gods, and try to live a good life by giving, helping others, and meditation and praying - but they are looking at the wrong trees, so to speak. (v5-8) Moses wrote about the righteousness from the law. and the person shall live by the commandments. But the righteousness based ...
